QUERCUS PALUSTRIS *

Common Name: Pin Oak

Hardiness Zones: 4-8

Habit: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Rapid

Site Requirements: Sun; range of soil types including wet soil

Texture: Medium

Form: Pyramidal; dense; pendulous lower branches; loses lower limbs with age

Height: 60 to 80'

Width: 40 to 50'

Leaf: 3 to 6" alternate, simple leaves; 5 to 7 deeply cut lobes; russet, bronze, red fall color

Flower/Fruit: .5" acorn

Comments: Young trees and lower branches of older trees hold leaves throughout winter; fibrous root system; transplants well

QUERCUS PHELLOS *

Common Name: Willow Oak

Hardiness Zones: 5-9

Habit: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Moderate to rapid

Site Requirements: Sun; prefers moist well drained soil but will grow in a wide range of soil conditions including compacted soil

Texture: Fine to medium

Form: Conical in youth; rounded crown; dense

Height: 60 to 80'

Width: 30 to 40'

Leaf: 2 to 5.5" alternate, narrow, simple leaves; slightly wavy; yellow to yellow brown fall color

Flower/Fruit: .5" acorn; often alternate years of heavy bearing; not as messy as some oaks

Comments: Native; fibrous root system; easy to clean up in fall

Flower/Fruit: Creamy, fragrant flowers in July August; long lasting cream colored seed pods

Comments: Produces light shade; withstands heat, air pollution, and drought; leguminous; good street tree

Site Requirements: Sun; well drained soil; tolerates drought and air pollution

Texture: Medium

Form: Rounded; symmetrical; flat top with age

Height: 60 to 75’

Width: 60 to 75’

Leaf: 4.5 to 8.5" alternate, simple leaves with 7 to 11 lobes; russet red to bright red fall color

Flower/Fruit: .7 to 1" acorn

Comments: Easy to transplant

Common Name: Scarlet Oak

Site Requirements: Sun; tolerates dry, sandy soil

Texture: Medium to coarse

Form: Symmetrical in youth; round, open, spreading crown with age
